10/10/08 - 10/12/08 Lower Gauley River Rafting

We drove north in search of the best rapids we could find. On Highway 19, on our way into Fayetteville, West Virginia, we discovered the New River Gorge Bridge. Up until 2004 it was the highest steel-arch bridge in the world. We stood 876 feet above the New River in anticipation of our trip down the rapids the next morning.

But first we had to find our armory,"The Hilton" ,which turned out to be the Taj Mahal of armories. But next time we will remember to count the cots before we leave Chester.Saturday morning we anxiously got ready for our day. With the fall colors at their peak, frost on the ground and after donning our wetsuits we headed to the river with our raft guides. We have floated the Chattooga River and the Whitewater Center in NC, but the Gauley River, by far, was the most beautiful, heart stopping, adrenaline pumping rafting trip ever. Several of us swam voluntarily and a couple of us were violently ejected from our rafts. But we made it safely back to dry land.
